I have a 99 contour 4 cylinder automatic. has 67,000 miles on it. I have done nothing to the engine.

Well this past saturday it started making a ticking noise. from the passenger side engine bay. Well the next day I noticed it was louder. It sounds like the Game show Wheel of Fortune when their spinning the wheel.

The car ran hotter than normal sunday. but not necessary in the hot. As i drove it around I noticed as long as i was moving the temp stayed bout normal but when i stopped it went back up.

Anyone got any clue as to what this could be? Didn't know if one of the teeth on the water pump could of broke off and the other hitting it.

The noise gets faster when you rev up the car.

Thanks in advance,
Bradley

Put you hand on top of the timing belt cover(black plastic piece on the passenger side of the engine), if you feel something hitting the cover then do one of two things: check if the timing belt needs to be replaced or take the cover off, put some washers under it, then put it back on.

That sounds like the infamous timing belt. My car ticks too.

nooooooo this only happens when the miles get up there on the old timing belt cause it starts to streachout causing the noise if you replace the belt all should be good unless there is a deeper problem

Gotta disagree with you there. Mine has done it since about 30K.

FOUND OUT IT WAS THE IDLER PULLEY AND TENSIONER PULLEYS THAT WERE MAKING THE NOISE.
