I have a 99 contour SE model. automatic.

Last night after I left a restaurant I noticed it was making a ticking noise. . Never heard it before in my life. Well it was dark so the next morning I went out and it was doing the same thing. Checked all the fluids and everything was ok. It sounds like the valves are ticking. Never had this problem before. Or kinda like a pully might be going bad but no of them wobble or anything like that. It's definately coming from that side though.

I noticed the car was running a little hot this morning also. Almost in the middle of gauge. Usually stay on the C side.

The car has 68,000 miles. Bought it about 7 months ago have done nothing to it besides oil changes. and such.

Was just curious is someone has had this problem before?

Thanks in advance for all the help,
Bradley

Ok I drove the car to a friend of mines house. As I was driving it there I noticed it ran sorta hot at the red lights. But when I was going down hills or moving it backed down to the regular setting.

It seems like the noise is louder now. I was wondering if the Water Pump has gone out and one of the fins broke off, and that's what i'm hearing?

Thanks again guys,
Bradley

if the water pump broke, you would be overheating real fast

You can get a ticking on the passenger end of the engine if the timing belt is hitting the timing cover. This shouldn't make it overheat though. Place your hand on the black plastic timing cover at the passenger end of the engine, and see if you can feel the belt slapping the cover. Otherwise, a ticking noise accompanied by overheating could be caused by insufficient oil being pumped. Hope that's not the case.

I have a constant rattling noise coming from my engine....
seems to not harm anything as it has been around for awhile... would the timing belt problem be just a "tick" here, and a "tick" there?? or would it be constant? like a pulley/accessory problem?

Is timing belt service expensive??

Unfortunately, the Duratech uses a chain instead of a belt, so I don't think that is your problem.

Does the tick increase with engine speed? You are aware that this engine is prone to spinning bearings. A spun bearing would increase friction and heat. A spun bearing would require either engine replacement or some expensive engine work.

A spun bearing would probably require a line hone and bore, turned and balanced crankshaft, new bearings... Not cheap.

Were you using synthetic? What you should do is cut open your current oil filter and check it for metal shavings. That will tell you if there is something fishy going on.

I drive my 98 CSVT every day..... this "rattle" has been with my car since I've owned it, I guess maybe I did not notice it quite so much until now. Not that its louder, just that I wish it wasn't there......

Anyway,
I just did an oil change..... I currently use Mobil 1 synthetic........I've read much about similar "rattle" or "rattling" type sounds coming from the duratech engine.... It seems in my case that I can hear the sound coming mostly from the accessory (or left) side of the engine.....Could I have a pulley that is making that much noise? Perhaps a water pump?? The car has 67,xxx miles on it and still the stock plastic impeller waterpump.
What would be my first step in diagnosing the problem....... if, infact, I were looking to check for a spun bearing?? Any other Ideas on what this is??

Thanks!

How can I tell if my 4cylinder is not pumping oil efficiently.

Like I stated before this started all of a sudden.

Thanks,
Bradley

Also the noise gets faster when you rev up the car. I listened to all the parts holding a rod up to my ear and can't hear where exactly the car is ticking from.

When I had my old Dodge Shadow my engire started to tick and the ticking got worse either when you accelerated or as time when on.

I had to replace my engine because something (cylinder?) was going up too far and hitting the top of the engine block. Dont quote me on that...happened a long time ago.

waterpump is on the other side of the engine.

The duratec's timing chains make some noise as they do their thing

Possible you have a bad serp. belt or pully (most likely tensioner in that case)

If you had an engine knock you'd know it.
