I've noticed this week that as I enter the highway and begin accelerating hard, I hear a swooshing noise with a jet turbine type pitch coming from under the car (E1 with 60k), seemingly independent from the beautiful engine noise.
It is ONLY when I accelerate - as soon as I ease off it goes away - especially in lower RPMs of higher gears.

I thought it was maybe some sort of hole in the exhaust, but as I said, it only occurs when there is tension in the drivetrain. There is no noise if I just rev out of gear.

I know its coming from under the car because as I pass over different road surfaces the intensity changes.

No noticeable performance degradation.

Anybody know where it might be coming from???

Got a similar sound from mine when I installed a K&N air filter. I believe that it's a very mild variant of "the moose".

Just my free couple of pennies.

Good Luck,
David

I have a problem just like that. When I gas hard or usually when I'm getting on the freeway it makes this weird sound from under the car but mines more of a hard sound rather than a swooshing like ggggggg sound then it goes away when I ease off the gas. confused

That's exactly what happend to me when my cats started breaking apart. If you start expiriencing a loss of power that is probably your answer.

I was going to say early stages of cat failure also. Mine went from barely noticable "whoosh" to mostly crippled in about 1.5 weeks.

Is there a reason why I wouldn't notice the problem when revving out of gear though? I can only notice it when car is under accleration.

I think it's normal. This engine in particular has all sorts of pleasant whines and wooshings. The tranny is also louder than the norm, perhaps that's why it's only there under load.

The cat failure recall officially covered 95 and some 96 only, I haven't heard of many cat failures after that.

That use to happen to mine for a long time. I'm not sure when it started but this is what happend when i went to Sentry South (bill Jenkins) The service department told me that my 1 vacum line was disconnected and the other damaged. I didn't think that there was anything wrong until bill Jenkins had it fixed. If you can check this for yourselves then i say go for it.

If there is a chance that your cat is breaking apart, be careful when running your car. When you let off the throttle at higher RPM shifts, there is a chance that the little pices of the cat can be sucked back into the engine and possibly do damage. This would be the most extreme worst case scenario though.
