I did a search, and really didn't find what I was looking for. I was driving last night, and all the sudden the heat went way up. I thought it might be instrumentation, but then the check engine light went on. I pulled off and it was steaming in there. It was also not blowing hot air inside the car. The mechanic came and did a quick check and said he didn't think it was a head gasket, but a clog somewhere in the system. I looked and I wasn't leaking anywhere in the ground. Any ideas? Someone told me to take it to a lube place at the ford dealer to do a flush and fill and pressure check to see if anything is internally messed up. Would that help? Also, how far do you think it is safe to drive it at low speeds to get it to a ford dealer?

I had a problem like that with my contour, did the flush, water pump new, hoses and still overheated but did not spit anything out. My problem was the low speed fan locked up on my 95 contour gl and caused havoc till the high speed fan came on to try to keep things cool. Ford eventually put a recall out for fixing the part and putting in a fuse to keep it from frying the wire harness when the low speed fan would lock up. Just get into the engine bay and see if the fan spins freely, if so check to see if it comes on with the car running.

sounds like your fan bearings are shot. I believe it is covered under recall.
