the simple bolt-in is nice. The original instructions in the how-to section use the ball mounts that come with the hood struts, and require drilling and tapping into the hood.

I don't find the ball mounts causing any flexing on the hood. They do not cause any more strain than the ones described above.
I think that you may be referring to the fender flexing. For that I found a substitute mounting method at Pep boys that consists of a 8mm threaded clip that will clip over the fender lip.

My F-150 is a '01, but I believe that any built after '98 will use hood struts. The Hood Struts are NOT compatible. The struts called out in the how to section are the correct ones to buy. The compatible parts are the ball mounts on the F-150 that screw into a flange on the fender well.
Hope this clears up any confusion on my installation method.
Delatman, good research on the current issue of hood struts for the Tours'. the original method in the How-to does need some improving.
