I'm stumped. I have a 96 Mystique with a 2.oL engine. Within the last couple of weeks, I've noticed my heat isn't working. There's a bit of warm air coming out of the heater, but not like it did last year. I also noticed that the temp gauge doesn't seem to move. When I punch it(accelerate), sometimes it starts working for a while and the heat comes on good. Can this problem be my thermostat? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know, Thanks.

Yep, sounds like it. Thermostat is probably staying open.

Yup, sounds like a stuck open Tstat. The coolant is always flowing so when it's cold, the engine doesn't get a chance to warm up.

I have the same problem -- no heat. How does one fix it, assuming it is the thermostat stuck open?
Thanks in advance...

Only way I know is to replace the thermostat.

Does your temperature gauge now read where it should? Or is it still not moving?

That makes it sound like the thermostat really was defective, and that replacing it has solved that part of the problem. It sounds now like the hot water from the engine is not circulating through the heater core.
I have been told that some engines (Pontiac) have a tendency to develop an 'air lock' in the cooling system, which prevents the hot water from circulating. I've never heard of this happening on a Contour though. I would try to figure out if the hot water really is circulating from the engine to the heater core. I have no experience in doing this, though, so I'm only thinking out loud. I'll check through my service manual and see if I can find anything. Good luck.

There is one option to try.
Look under the dash passenger side. Look towards the center somewhere behind in the area of where the radio would sit, you neck should hurt doing this.
There is a white box with a wire harness connected to it. This is the control motor the moves the blend door that mixes hot and cold air.
There is a square knoby thing sticking out. This is the motor drive shaft to the door. Put your fingur on it.
With the ignition on move the tempurature control dial from hot to cold and back again (slowly). You should feel this knob thing turning. If it is not turning then your the blend door is stuck in one position.
Let me know what you find. Good Luck.
