My 96SE has 101000 miles on it. While in for service recently, I was told that my serpentine belt was cracking and needed replacement (to the tune of $80). It is the original belt. Does this seem reasonable, or are they just trying to get more money out of me? Also, if I were to replace it myself instead, what would be involved (cost, how to go about replacing it)? Thanks for your help.

Changed mine just a few weeks ago. Search the sites for directions. Quite easy. You will need a 3/8" breaker bar (get at Sears or Lowes, etc. to wiggle into the tension pulley. With that it is a piece of cake. Less than $20 for the belt, $10 for the tool, 30 minutes work.

Mine is showing its age at 60K mi. and I'm about to replace it. Also make sure they checked the water pump belt (it's separate).
