You all know how Ford changed our engine's displacement from 2544cc to 2498cc sometime in 2000. My question is how do we know which version of the engine we have? My car's date off the door is 5/00.

Thanks

I don't think it was "sometime in 2000", I believe all 2000's have the lower displacement V6's.

Something about EPA tightening up the emissions regulations for 2.5L engines in 2000. So rather than make changes to the 2544cc V6 Ford decided to reduce the engine's displacement to 2498cc.

Correct. All 2000's have the 2499cc engine.

Actually it was to come in under the 2500cc mark for the European market so they were not subject to the very high tax for selling an engine larger than 2500cc. They feared that customers having to pay this stiff displacement tax would hurt there sales.

Is there a way to tell on a 99 from part #'s? Like a VIN# or any numbers on the engine?

And I know they compensated the HP on the SVT's by bumping up the CR by .25 but what about on regular Duratecs? How did they compensate for what, ~5HP? Is this why the SVT LIM was used in regular Duratecs?

Your model year is encoded into your VIN. 10th digit.

It's also on the emissions sticker under the hood. "Certified to OBD-II requirements for xxxx model year" or something of the like.

Somebody posted an extensive explanation about this a while back. He explained how to read the engine numbers from the sticker on the engine and how to tell which ones were the smaller engine. He explained that some 99's had the smaller engine as well as all 2000's. You might find that thread with a search. It may have been in the old forums.

But I guess that I can't post this. My state just fell into the ocean.

I don't remember the code, but my 99 has the smaller engine. Build date was 6/99
