The last week or so I have been noticing an occasion HUGE hesitation under hard acceleration in my 2000 SVT (29K miles). Hesitation maybe isn't even the word for it, as the car really falls on its face. It happens about 4500 rpm. It's good up until that point, and then it just hits a wall--like a soft limiter or something. It wouldn't go beyond that-full throttle would just maintain speed. It was still making all sorts of noise, not like the sound if I backed off of the throttle to keep the revs at that level. In fact, if I backed off enough, it would slowly increase revs. But if I stomped on it again, the same thing would happen. Also, I found that if I changed up, it would accelerate normally again. If I then downshifted so that I was at 5250 or 5500 rpms, it would also accelerate fine from there. Anybody have any thoughts on what is going on here and what I could do to resolve the problem?

Thanks!

Some possibilities based on my own experience and what I've read here:

Bad fuel pump - have you noticed any difference if the tank is close to empty or full? If problems only happen when the tank is more empty than full it could be a pump on the way out, or even something more simple like the filter.

Bad plugs/wires - This was the problem I had. I installed crappy splitfires before I knew any better. I had hesitation only on the freeway (75+mph @ 3000+rpm) at WOT. Going WOT on the street from a dead stop didn't have a problem, all the way up to redline. Changing to Autolite double-plats (which are recommended) made all the difference. If you're already running double-plats you might have one or more bad plugs. Bad or frayed wires can do this also. It could also be the coil pack. If you can isolate the problem to be an ignition one, the best path is to replace plugs, then wires, then coil pack; based on cost.

I could also be way off here, since the problem you describe is similar to mine but different, but I figure any suggestions you can try would be better than none.

Thanks for the ideas Hetfield

While I can't rule anything out, it doesn't seem like a plugs/wires thing to me-too inconsistant. I was a bit low on fuel (just below 1/4 tank) so that lead will be easy to check out. If it continues and proves to be repeatable, I will take it in. It is still under warrantee.

Any other ideas out there?

Hey I got the same problem but mine is when the tank is around a quarter full. I replaced the filter and not too much help. I am probably going to have ford change the fuel pump since mine is under warenty also. It is good that someone else is also experiancing the same as me. I will keep you posted on my efforts and if you can keep me posted on yours too.

This is still very preliminary, but I was tearing around a little be over my lunch break, and it appears that with a full tank, the problem doesn't occur. But that was only a few tries. Clearly more testing is required !!!

LOL thanks!

The funny addition to that is I took the car in to Boucher in Janesville to try and trade for a '99 SVT. The salesman did a walk-around, and when he got to the back he said, "so, I see the car's been through here already." I must've turned three shades of red because I totally forgot I did that.

I remember being in the 'fuel pump' club in the old forums
(read: fuel pump problems are not uncommon). Mine lasted for 100k miles.

I had very similar symptoms (low tank: hesitation @ certain RPMs, full tank: no problem). When I changed the fuel filter, the problem went away for 1-2 weeks then came again.

If you're under warranty, take it in... otherwise a FP swap is not a big pain.
