It could be misfire or can be if u have a atx the trans needs tuneup and bad motor mounts contribute also. I say press brake and give it gas if it worse u have a bad plug wire or plug. If the motor clunks it has bad motor mount. If the car erractic doing this the transmission needs attention

Although the Zetec tends to be a little rough at idle, you can often mitigate it.

Make sure that the engine tune is up to snuff. Especially the idle air control and throttle body. If these are even a little bit dirty, the idle speed may drop a little, enough to agrivate the roughness. Without saying, the plugs and plug wires must be sound as well.

Anything that can interfear with the motors mounts job of isolating normal engine vibration should also be checked. Old saging mounts are a posibility, but not overly likely. Air conditioning lines that are out of position and hitting the body can transmit a lot more vibration than you might expect. Anything that is very stiff that attaches to the engine that is touching the body, including in some cases wire looms.

Sometimes it helps to make sure that the motor mounts are not binding. Loosen the mounts then start the engine and load the engine gently in gear, both drive and reverse, (with you foot firmly on the brake of course) so that the mounts can center and have any stress relieved.

Worn mounts on the engine cooling fan or a fan that is out of balance can make a lot of vibration.

Sometimes, nothing seems to help. You may, however, be able to minimize it.

i seem to have the same problem...when i first bought the car april 01 it was very slight and only when i would put the car into reverse...it gradually got a little more noticeable but still only in reverse....

well i had my atx replaced at ford dealer and they informed me that two of my tranny mounts were bad...they replaced but i think there is still one that needs to be replaced (how many tranny and/or motor mounts does a v6 have?)...

anyway since i've gotten the car back the vibration is worse and pretty much every gears except park....really rough in drive but goes away when i press on the throttle

when i look i think im seeing two new mounts but the one directly on top the the atx looks like it wasn't one of those replaced so im thinking thats my problem

try this to test if you need new trans or motor mounts, place a floor jack under the engine oil pan with a piece of wood between the jack and pan. gently lift the engine till the strain is off of the mounts. if the vibration stops, you need new mounts. replace them one at a time till you have corrected the problem. start with the one between the engine and the radiator. this one has the most strain. hope this helps. cool

Putting the car into neutral does help a lot, and eliminates all of the "vibro-mode." I'm gonna see if the Ford Racing wires, once the mailman delivers them, will also help my idle, because mines are kinda old (7 years now).
