I'm taking a nice cruise in Detroit last night when I apply substantial braking to quickly stop from 140 to 0. I park the car to notice my brakes are smoking, the rotors are red hot and theres a 6 inch flame coming from my calipers. I just wondered if this is normal or is it some kind of problem. The rotors /pads are only 3 weeks old.

holy ship .. did your brakes fail at all? I know when I go for joy rides and mess with my car making excessive stops, the brakes tend to get real hot and fail. I have never seen a flame. The rotors do get VERY hot, and if something that was flamable was near the rotors, it it quite possible that is what was on fire

Two things:

1) If your brakes get that hot, you should either drive around for a few minutes to cool them off or leave the car in gear without using the emergency brake when you park. Holding hot pads against scorching hot rotors is a good way to shorten pad and rotor life.

2) If your brakes are new enough that they haven't completely bedded in yet (depends on how much you've driven in the last 3 weeks), making stops like that are also a bad idea. The pads may never bed in correctly if you get them that hot too early.

I havent heard of that one happening before, but i know when i use my brakes excessively, they fail to, they just dont work for [censored]. they get a little hot haha, but i am doing a conversion to the SVT Focus brake system, which consists of, svt rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, and pads, the rotors are 30mm.......the bear kit rotors are 33, the ones your currently have right now are 20mm

i hope your talking width.. cause 30mm rotors are pretty small

i think the focus svt rotors are like 315 mm, and contour svts are 295.. don't quote me.. but i think i'm closer than you

All that aside, the pads are non-flamable so there is probably something down there like oil, atx fluid, steering fluid, or leaking brake fluid. A fire may damage the piston boots or flexible brake hose so you better look at them for damage.

No they did'nt fail at all. The ABS is a lot different in that car than my last car (chevy).I like it a lot better. The pedal slowly went and stopped at the floor, but the braking never lightened up. I would have drove around if I was'nt able to blow the fire out so easily. This guy on the street was about to call 911. I'm pretty sure the brakes had already been broken in.I put 3500 miles in it in the first three weeks I had it. And I'm pretty sure I broke them in pretty good. I should check on the steering fluid because the car makes a grinding noise when I accelerate while turning. Maybe something wrong with the steering. But anyways the shifter blew(or so I think), any gear is 4th gear so It's on the truck now anyways. I miss it already .

I would be checking the caliper piston seals for damage. new pads tend to run hotter for quite awhile. Is 140 right to 0 totally necessary?

Where in Detroit can you drive 140 MPH?
Please let me know.

I don't live that far away, and have always wanted to take the car to near top speed.

More importantly, where can you hit 140 and come to a complete stop?
