DOES ANYONE ELSE check their mileage regularly? what do YOU get?
my fuel economy sucks! what is everyone else getting? (from a comparable car: 2000 SE with 2.5 and automatic)
i have been consistently getting between 17 and 20. that sucks! my mustang gets that. my friend's 2001 GT mustang gets over 20, most of the time.
i have been REALLY REALLY nice to it, during my most recent tank of gas, so i will report that when i fill it up this week.

That's about what I get. Usually 20 to 25, depending on city or highway trips. Usually do better wiht premium for some reason. I noticed it was also a bit better with new cats (replaced under warranty)

I bet you have an actual problem. Do a little maintenance and see if that helps. Try gaping your plugs, changing your plugs, changing your fuel/air/oil filter. Change your oil. Toss some injection cleaner in the fuel tank (after you change your filter of course). Don't drag race at every light, try driving a little easy (car lasts longer too). Check your tire pressure. Do you have stock tires on? Smaller tires may be messing you up. Course I have set a car on fire before doing maintenance so what do I know

there is definitely some room for improvement with some regular maintenance... but the thing is, that i have been getting this mileage since the first day i bought it.
i guess 20-25 is "normal" but come on! i bought this car because i thought it was the "adult" thing to do... (as opposed to a newer mustang with a V-8, or supercharged V-6...
i am just disappointed that there are cars out there that are faster than mine, that also get better fuel economy. SUCK !

I get from 23-25mpg in mixed driving (60% highway) and I have a lead foot.
I have seen 30mpg in 100% highway driving.
I have a modified 00 SVT.
Fo ref - the wifes 2.4L DOHC ATX Cavalier gets 30-31mpg in mixed driving... Maybe 28mpg in city driving & 33mpg in 100% highway...
IMO I am not at all impressed with the Ford ATX.

2000 V6 MTX here I get about 25 mpg on average (I dont have my excel sheet here I would be able to tell you my exact milage since I got the car (and how much I spent on gas over that time also ) the only mods on my car are the DRL's (dont know if that cause any change in mileage since I put them on when I got the car) and the SVT exhaust (better mileage on the highway - worse in town) before I got the SVT exhaust I was getting about 24-26 most times and with the SVT exhaust I have been getting 23(more city) - 27 (almost all highway except for the 10 mins of backroads to my house) ohh yeah and on the highways it seems that the faster I go the better my gas mileage is (at least the tanks I did mostly 75-85 mph seems to get better mileage than when I only do 65-75 (now if they would just raise the limits here in MD I could see what would happen at faster speeds

Funny, My SVT is getting about 22 on the highway. It was getting about 27. I changed the exhaust a little. Do you think that the engine is leaning out?

I get the same mileage you do. I don't think there is a problem though it's normal for that type of driving. If I do highway driving I always get at least 28/29. I've gotten 33 before. That's my record so far, on a trip to NC.

My "other" car is an '86 Ford LTD mid-size w/3.8 liter V6 (around 120 hp) & 3-speed atx w/ torque converter lockup. Gets as high as 22 mpg for straight freeway down to 16 for city. Sounds like you're doin' better than that! Just for comparison, my '99 SE 4 cyl atx has reached as high as 35 mpg highway (that's w/ 4 on board & a trunk full of luggage). I've driven from Columbus OH to St. Louis MO (approx 400+ mi) on one tank of gas (two on board this trip).

that is EXACTLY my complaint! your 1986 CARBURETED WAGON gets very close to the same as i do, in my 2000 Contour!
if i wanted high-teens in fuel economy, i would have opted for a Mustang, or camaro, for that matter. this is total crap!
as for your contour getting "at least 28-29 on the highway" that pisses me off too. i once got 28, and another time i got 25. that was "good" for my car.
just pisses me off, that there are SO many cars faster and more fun than mine, that get as good, or BETTER fuel economy...
