First I have 96 Contour Sport with 50020 miles. The problem is my check engine light started to come on and go off at 45000. Now it stays on all the the time. Could it be a O2 sensor bad any 4 of them? If not the O2 sensor what goes bad with my currrent miles on my Sport?

It could be any number of things. Without a code scanner or taking it to a dealership you won't really know.

Did you notice your gas mileage changing and getting worse? Sometimes this is a indication of O2 sensor going bad!

Gas cap fix. Check that gas cap seal. If dirty, wipe excess scum off and over tighten.

Temp remove the battery cable which will reset the computer. Do this after a fix. Ex. gas cap, then battery cable, re-attach and start car. Notice light or absense of CEL.

Other then that, get some real strong injector cleaner and run this through on a full tank and repeat once more on the second tank. I heard someone say that this helped them with CEL!

Hope this helps!

My 98 Contour SE Sport did this just about a month ago and they found that it was the mass air flow sensor and then they tried to blame the bad mass air flow sensor on my intake and tried stiffing me for a 700$ bill which i have warranty and that is crap...

Thats my 2cents....

Like they mentioned in the above posts, it could be a number of things and unless you scan for a code, you really won't know for sure, especially since you have an OBD2 compliant system. This means, you need a scanner.

What I can tell you is that with your mileage and model year, the EGR and passages around the throttle body and intake manifold mating area get plugged with carbon. They need to be cleaned every 30K miles or sooner to keep this part of your emission system running optimally. Sometimes the O2's and/or CAT's go bad, especially if your engine has been running rich for a while. Anyhow, one quick and cheap check on your EGR is to pull vacuum on the valve itself. Idle your car and remove the top vacuum tube from the valve. Pull some vacuum on the valve using a small hose and see if the engine begins to stumble or run rough. If it does not do anything, then you are plugged up and that could be part of your problem. Other than that, you need diagnostic equipment cause you will go nuts trying to figure this one out.
