The data base for key codes goes back to 96. Since 96 was the first year, it is a little spotty. My experience has been that you can usually get a key code for a 96.
Sometimes the selling dealer records the key code and if they did, you may be able to call them for it.
Other than that, the only other way is to have a locksmith make a key from scratch.
The dealer probably will require proof of ownership before giving you a key code. A copy of the registration and your driver's license is usually sufficient.
