Oh my god, this cold start grinding noise is SO BAD now that it's cold... it has always been there after my car sits for a couple of days or more, but now that it's getting colder, it sounds HORIBLE in the morning when I start my car. I swear this thing is going to blow up. The car is in cherry condition in and out, oil changes have ALWAYS been done on schedule, now since I have had the car (for the last 12k miles)I have been putting in Mobile 1 5W-30 synthetic oil only. Someone please help me out here, this noise is getting really loud and it is imbarassing when it happens in front of people. Other than this noise, car is flawless (outside of the ocasional IMRC failure but that's a whole different storry).
BTW, I have a 98' SE 2.5L MTX.

If you mean the nasty grinding for a couple of seconds after it starts thats the timing chain tensioner leaking down making the chain loose until you have oil pressure. Dealer recomends taking the front off and putting in their new and expensive tensioner accumulator. They also say it doesn't do any damage, yeah right.

have you got the 4 cyl or the v6 2.5lt ?? If it is the 4cyl it is the timing belt .slaping against the timing cover. the belt needs to be replaced, before it jumps a tooth. The 4 cyinder have a belt for timing and the V6 have a chain. if it is the v6 then it's like the other guy said it is the hydraulic tensor leaks off . it needs replacement IT IS ONLY AVAILIBLE AT A FORD DEALER > BIG MONEY. they want 120 Canadian 4cyl you can adjust the tension manualy . you need a small allen key and a wrench . but if is realy loose you should replace belt.

If it is a high-pitched sound, it could be your serpentine belt.

It's thje 2.5L V6 MTX as I said at the end of the post (sorry for not posting it at the begining where I should have). It is the nasty grinding noise, has NOTHING to do with belt slipage... it is something else, now that I think about it, it totaly sounds like a chain running across metal, must be the timing chain tensioner, it must be. That really sucks, how much is it and how hard is it to replace yourself (or how much is it at the dealer)? Is there anything else that I will need?

If you never did a chain before, I woudn't recommend doing it without some good help. It's a bit of work and if you screw it up.........
Don't know dealer price but it's early so "sit down" and give them a ring. They really do say it won't hurt it, but it sucks and lots of them do it.

Oh, BTW - if the oil pump is going out or if it primes slow, that makes it MUCH worse. Keep an eye on the guage.
