I have a 96 GL, 2.5 atx with 67K miles, and so far I love it. I have a question though. When I put it in reverse a strange noise comes from the rear of the car. I sounds like two gears slightly rubbing, or like a bad fan motor. The car goes into reverse easily, and drives smoothly. Just wondering if anyone has had similar problems.
Thanks for any responses.

it may the rear brakes rubbing a little bit. Brakes are always supposed to rub a little bit.

If they are making noise I might think that the pads/shoes are worn and need replacement.

The car start making the noise as soon as I put it in reverse when the car is sitting still and my foot on the brake, so I dont think it is the brakes. Sounds more like it is coming from under the back seat.

exacly, after the car has sat for a while its even worse right?

if so then it is the brakes. It is worse after sitting overnight becasue the brake surfaces rust, the noise you hear is the rust being ground away.

I can't imagine a wheel bearing problem making noise in only one direction.

it may also be a loose heat shield for the exhast system. Crawl under the car and see if there are any loose spots.
