I have a '98 SE with a Duratec and 5-speed transmission, and I have this irritating rattle somewhere on the passenger side of the dash. I checked the glovebox (even resorting to removing it), tightened the amp screws, checked the CD deck, and in general made sure nothing was loose that I could see. Nothing was. But still the noise persists. That corner of the dash pad is warped (the corner is lifted an inch), but I don't think it's the cause. Does anyone have any insight on this noise?

I have the same noise. Mine goes away if I turn the defrost on heat. It takes about 20 seconds for it to go away. It is worse in cold weather. Let me know if you find the problem.

Most of the time those are just loose mount point for the dash...There are 6-7 hex head screws holding the dash in. Or it might be the Passenger Air bag rubbing the dash.

My own thought is with the cabin filter; the noise is almost at the firewall. I WON'T go to the dealer; they'll charge me two hours' labor to tell me what's NOT wrong. mad But I'll check the airbox and airbag again.

Let you know what shakes loose.

i had the same noise
it was the handle to the glove box. if u press on it. then like it go it should go away. its bad when the car is running rough in cold weather.

I have the same problem, prolly something with the dash, I'm too lazy to rip the dash apart though.

It isn't the glovebox handle; I've taken the box out entirely. I ripped the dash apart and tightened everything, and I'm beginning to think something else is making noise, but it's doing a ventriliquist act. I'm starting to wonder about the passenger side front strut mount or the strut itself.

Me too!! I have this problem! Very annoying. mad Usually happens in cold weather also. it sounds like something is vibrating around in the dash(thought it might be some wiring rattling around) Only happens in my tour when it shifts into a lower gear though.
I've driven it twice w/ the dash ripped apart and no noise, tighten everything up, put it back together and it's back. Funny thing is it never used to do it. Go figure confused

I have a similar rattle. You have to apply pressure all around the dash while it is happening to try and zero in on where it might be coming from, then figure how to stop it. Maybe wedging a small shim in one of the cracks where the dash and the plastic by the windshield meet. Keep searching and good luck.

I have had the problem for a while and it bothered me like crazy until I found that it was caused by the plastic piece where the defrost vents are - where the dash meets the windshield (I'm guessing this is only applicable to pre 99s).

To see if this is the problem, apply pressure to this piece while you drive. You should be able to immediately stop it by simply touching it lightly.

Initially I thought it was the entire panel where the airbag is located because if I pressed it down hard enough it would stop. Well it's not.

You can simply shim the defrost panel between the windshield permanently with cardboard, kleenex, or whatever.
