Jim, I respect that you have seen a few replaced. However, I have seen many, many more than a few built...

Anyway a lot of this has been covered before:
VCT vs. non-VCT discussion:
http://www.contour.org/archive/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB33&Number=391099&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

To summarize:
1995-1997 Zetec = No VCT
1998-2002 Zetec (non-focus) = VCT on Exhaust
2000-2002 Zetec Focus = No VCT
2000-2002 Zetec Escape= No VCT
2002 Focus SVT = VCT on Intake

Sticking VCT discussion:

I looks like I owe you an apology. I did not read your post closely enough to realize that the discussion had shifted from Contours to all Zetecs. I must admit that I have not followed the Focus very well. The Focus Zetec may very well not have VCT except the the Focus SVT. I really don't know. I do know that I have seen a lot of Contours and Mystiques with VCT. That is where this thread started. I jumped in when someone said that Ford didn't use VCT, that it was a Honda thing. There are several engines besides Honda's that use VCT, and that number will probably increase greatly. Among them are Volvo and Jaguar. According to Blue Oval News, the upcoming 3 valve 5.4 Ford truck engine will also use VCT.

It's not a performance feature, only for emissions so Ford could get rid of the costly PCV valve. My guess, Ford marketing didn't see any point.

I think you mean EGR, not PCV. Also, the VCT on the INTAKE cam of the Focus SVT might run counter to your argument.
