Stock Coil is pretty bomb proof. I've never heard of one going bad (I've heard of a lot of aftermarket ones dying though). HT leads often fail, coil is the block thing that your ignition leads go to (No thats the engine, its the smaller block thing at the other end ) Rough idle is comman and can have a lot of causes. Normally vacuum realated Underneath the coil is a rubber T piece, check this is intact as it often splits. Also the EGPD valve often plays up If you give a more precise description of the idle problem, like at what revs, when hot or cold etc I'll have a go a guessing what its likely to be

My coil pack went bad at about 88000 miles. I had it replaced. My car also jerks suddenly now when it shifts....bad sensor somewhere?

For what it's worth, my '97 Mystique started doing the fluctuating rpm's at cold startup (rollercoastering up and down)and over time began doing it in gear as well when I was stopped at a light. After some more time I finally got a CEL and found out I had a bad HEGO (heated oxygen sensor.) Replaced the sensor and no problem since.

What did the HEGO cost to replace? My '95 Contour does the same thing at idle and if you step on the throttle when it's in park it revs up to about (2200)?? , no tach, and just surges, won't rev any higher. Any suggestions?

Hego normally doesn't cuase the surging idle. That suggests a blocked Crankcase breather (PSV) valve to me. Its cheap to replace (just fiddly) and is supposed to be changed every 30k miles
Take a look at my web site I have a huge section on idle probs in my information pages
