97 Ford Contour 2.0L 49k miles beautiful car...

when starting in the morning, you can hear/feel the timing belt hit the cover on the left/top side of the motor. This lasts for about 2 minutes, you feel a thump every 5 or six seconds.

Is this normal or is water pump/idler bearing going out..?

Also should I consider replacing timing belt/water pump/idler bearing..?

TIA

Can't tell u what is ur situatons.. but a LOT of people had this tapping on the cover and they simply removed the plastic cover....

(i changed my belt with about 80K miles.... i would guess u still have few thousands of miles left..)

It happens on both of my 95's, but I thought I read somewhere that the newer Zetecs had a re-designed cover to eliminate this problem. Maybe I'm only imagining this.

I also recall (faintly) something about redesigned covers.

Some people inserted a couple of washers to raise the cover.
