Well, neither the remote trunk opener or the floor lever will open the trunk any longer. What on earth could be causing this?? '98 Mercury Mystique LS Jamie

There is a switch behind the carpet panel near the bottom latch I believe. It's a safety feature in case you don't want your trunk opened without the key.
Mines right in front of the latch on the inside. it has a little orange cap on the lever.

Tried the lever in both positions. Was digging around in other parts of the forum, maybe a relay or solenoid. Boy I hate working on new cars. An really hate paying dealership prices. Oh well, thanks though. Jamie

If that switch was tripped, the remote entry release would still work. Possibly the cable broke...?

I recently had the same problem. I had the lock out on on the trunk and the remote started not working but just for the trunk, it worked for everything else. The interior light still came on when you pushed the button but no release on the trunk. They had to replace the solenoid and it is working fine now. Plus my key did not work so I was completely locked out of the trunk.

Alan,
I just installed on in the wife's 98 to go with the aftermarket remote starter/keyless entry system.
I finally found the solenoid at the local u-wrench-it for 8 bucks and got it installed and working in about an hour. Installing it involved adding a relay and a wiring run from the remote module back to the wiring harness by the driver's side rear seat where I spliced into the factory harness. Mounting the solenoid is a tight fit. If you can find a Contour that already has it installed, remove the rear liner from the trunk so you can get an idea how it is put together. That helped me alot.
I have no idea what the solenoid and link would cost at the dealer, you'd have to go in and check.

Where is the solenoid located? Is it in the fuse box in the engine bay? Thanks.

Open the trunk. Take off the plastic trim piece off the bottom of the trunk edge (the latch pops up through the piece I'm talking about). Find the solenoid and loosen the mounting screws just enough to move it. Move the solenoid away from the latch. Give it a test run to see if it works. If you have a fold down rear seat, you might want to fold it down prior to starting the adjustment. If it alls go wrong and the trunk doesn't open at all you can crawl in and readjust the solenoid's position. You might try adjusting the latch position also. I played with it for ~20 mins and it's ok now.
My interior release stopped working first then the remote stopped working, just like yours.

I have a problem and question similar to whats being talked about here, I have the remote open, but it doesnt always work. I can hit the butten and I hear a click, but it doesnt unlatch the trunk. Is this silenoid related? The inside release always works.
