I think Ford is better than most with regards to not leaving unused wiring connectors in the harness (maybe due to penny-pinching).
I haven't found very many unused connectors in either the '95 Contour or the '88 Mustang.
The one mystery connector I did find on the Contour turned out to be the ABS diagnostic plug.
