this just happened to me yesterday! i was so pissed off. my positive cable corroded completely through, just about 1/2" away from the terminal! i was SURE it should be considered a factory defect, which the local Ford dealership service manager so rudely disagreed with.
my car is a 2000, V-6, automatic, with only ( ha! i said 'only' ) 48,000 miles on it.
they wouldnt warranty it, nor use my extended warranty.
the new "cable assembly" (thats where they get you... 'assembly') was mine, for the one-time-only price of $136.80
screw that, i went to Batteries Plus, and they installed a universal cable/terminal, and even spliced the other wires into it for me : total bill $14.94
it even looked pretty 'stock,' it had a black plastic box that covered the splice part.

MY BIG QUESTION FOR ALL ! ! has this happened to anyone with LESS than (or close to) 48,000 miles? PLEASE let me know (Im50fast@aol.com) if it has, so i can not feel singled out by the hands of the evil.Ford gods...
