I also remember reading reports that the cone in the water can be loose and hit the impeller. When changing the pump this should be checked as well as this is not part of the water part replacment. There is not much clearance between the impeller and the cone.

Your recollection correct.
Stainless steel cone is part of wp housing which can only be obtained from Ford, as an assembly with white impeller. When failed wp impeller removed this cone should be checked for looseness.
Both mine failed in May, cones ok, metal impeller replacements installed.
