I just had the recall for the front coil springs done and now they rub on my tires!!!!.I have gone from a 205 to a 215 tire but want to know if anyone has a remedy for this other than going back to a smaller tire. Hell I just bought these 2 months ago. Thx

Maybe I missed it, but what recall are you talking about? Is it an old one??

I had the same recall done on my 98 LX. The coil shields are very close to the tires, but mine don't touch at all. I have the stock tires for my car. If you have a tire size slightly wider than stock, I can see where they may rub. If I were you, I'd remove the shields instead of changing the tires.

Which recall is this and what type of car do you have. I have a 98 SVT with eibach sprigs and i'm running 225 50 16 on stocker SVT rims with no rubbing. It seems like some cars rub and some don't. sounds similer to cracked secondaries, some run well and some don't

The dealer did the spring guard recall on my 98 Mystique last week when I took it in for a heater blower wiring recall. I didn't even know about the front spring recall until I started driving it home and noticed it clunked over every large bump. My 205/60R-15 tires were close enough to the guard that I could not even fit my little pinky finger between them, although I don't think that was causing the clunking noise.

I went back to the dealer earlier this week, complained of the noise and asked them to remove the guards. They said no, since it was a safety recall. They gave me the # of some Ford customer service center. Instead of going around in circles with them I dove home, removed them myself and tossed the guards in the trash.

Question: is all the Ford dealer doing is installing coil spring guards and not replacing the springs? This is about their speed (backwards), like the cooling fan fuse install. They do not replace the (maybe) defective fan motor and stick a fuse in that will blow when it craters. Then they sell you a new cooling fan assembly for $400 - what a rip. The coil spring breaks, the guard keeps the spring from carving up a tire so avoiding an accident, sell (former) customer new springs, blame state work crews for using salt to melt snow and ice instead of the spring supplier.
I heard years ago that Ford lost track for a few years (cost cutting) of what parts went to what plant into which models on what day.. Quality control got laid off.

They install spring guards per the recall to limit liability claims and tire damage when/if the springs break, I suppose. However, they also extended the warranty on the springs to 150,000 miles or 10 years. The warranty stays with the car, regardless of whether it is the original owner. I just received my recall notice today.

That dealer that would not take them off is full of crap. You should have tossed the guards through their window. Ford knows the guards are poorly designed and are supposedly redesigning them. For now, they suck bad. My dealer took two tries to fix them, and then the service manager had them removed (at my urging) because they couldn't get them right. Unless you see evidence of corrosion on your OEM springs, forget about them.

I just had my heater blower and coil catcher recall done on Wednesday. I brought it back Thursday because I couldn't mount my 205/65 series snow tires because they hit the coil catcher. The dealer said they mounted them wrong because they used the mounting instructions for the Windstar. They reinstalled them and put my snows on. Now there is less then an 1/8th inch clearance on one side and 1/16th on the other. I never even mentioned the clunking to them, which is quite noticeable. I will certainly be back there tomorrow to have them removed, armed with pages from this forum as evidence of Ford incompetance.
