What actually leads to throttle hang? What changes under the hood that makes us have to use the throttle hang fix. All the sudden one day I have this terrible hang problem, put the fix into place, and it's not a problem anymore, but why does it happen?

Curious in Calgary

I don't know. Don't have the problem myself, but thought I would say HI. Don't see many CEGers this close to me. I'll be in Calgary this Christmas.

IIRC, it's because of emissions.

From what I know, the car's worst emmisions is when it looses rpm's real quick, like in pressing in the clutch at high rpm. To help with this, ford makes the rpm's drop slower, helping out with emmissions... complete crap if you ask me, but thats the EPA for you!!! Peace!

No. It works very effectively. It burns off the extra gas left over when you close the throttle plate suddenly. Cuts emissions tremendously.

So thereby the TH fix will actually cause your cats to fail sooner. (eating more unburnt fuel - pre-cats especially!) Though I'm sure nobody looks at it that way...

Don't know what causes the problem but the cost of the fix is $186 plus taxes in Weyburn, SK. We should start a club! Having it done next week and will let you know if it works, got a whole herd of mooses under that hood right now.

The ford SVT people (the 1-800 number) will tell you that this is a "feature", put in place to satisfy EPA emission requirements, and they are not kidding here. However, I owned a 1996 SE (170HP Duratec), and never had the problem. I suspect the SVT engine has the problem because of its being in a higher state of tune (higher lift, longer duration cams, more agressive ECU software, higher compression pistons, etc.).

I have had this problem with my SVT since shortly after I purchased it in December, '99. I have tried the 7/32" plug in the air bypass tube and that does work for a little while. But then fuels apparently does puddle and the R's increase at Idle. Worse, because of the puddling, the engine will brake down under full throttle at higher RPM's because the sensors get conflicting readings.

This past week was especially bad. But yesterday, I think I may have solved my problem. It appears that a gas station I have been using may have had some contaminated tanks (water in particular). Yesterday, I purchased a bottle of water treatment and a bottle of fuel line cleaner (both STP), and the problem has disappeared!

I should note that if your engine not only hangs, but increases RPM's by several hundred or even 1000+, and stays in that range for 3-5+ seconds, you could have a bad throttle position sensor. Mine was replaced some time back and that particular piece of the puzzle was fixed.

Good Luck!

I wasnt saying it didn't work good, i was sayin that I dont think they need to have such tough standars, so maybe we could get some foreign cars into the U.S. that are being kept out due to emmisions... As for the CAT's, I did not know they would fail sooner, thanks for pointing that out. I dont need to worry, cause I have the good old mystery mod with the SHO Y's... Peace!!!
