Will the KKM intake work fine without a heat shield? Does it still draw air from below the car like the stock setup does? Thanks.

It will work, sure... but it won't draw much cool air while you are idling or going fairly slow...
That's why many are building heatshields.
I had a KKM on mine for quite a while, but ditched it for the SVT airbox since I noticed heat soak pretty much all the time (I do mostly city driving.)

Ok. I was just wondering because the KKM website says there is no need for a heat shield.

After 28,000 miles and more than two years of various intake setups including the SCA CAI w/ S&B (gauze), CAI w/ MonsterFlow (foam), MonsterFlow w/ KKM adapter, and S&B w/ KKM adapter, I reinstalled my stock SVT airbox with a Purolator paper filter last week. Maybe it's also the recent colder weather but wow what a difference. No more heatsoak (I also do mostly city) and torque steer is a bit stronger too. The engine sound is muted but it still sounds Really Good.
Against my previous stance, I may end up with a K&N drop-in, if just for the filtering efficiency.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to go with the K&N drop in and see what happens.

You won't notice a difference in terms of power. Though the K&N can flow at a higher rate, the stock airbox is still the restriction. The advantage the K&N can offer is that it doesn't clog like a paper filter; it actually filters better the dirtier it gets. This means you'll get more consistent performance over time and it also means you won't have to service the filter as often.
