I guess there must have been some flow through the clogged ports, but not enough for the DPFE sensor to have picked it up (or maybe it was too slow). If the passages were completely clogged to the flow of the EGR gasses, there's not really any way for the idle speed to be affected.

I take it that cleaning the passages fixed the problem.
