. The high beam indicator on the dash is made to flash when one of your DRL's (or high beams for that matter) blows out . When only one (DRL) bulb blows out ... they BOTH go out . Maybe you only had one bad bulb ... yea well , now you're covered for a while 
.They were run in series? Hmmm. Learn something new everyday! I know that some GM high beam DRL's ran the high beam bulbs in series, hence getting the 50% reduction in intensity.
FWIW, my GP runs the low beams at 80%.
