Unless you're wanting to completely kill off your trans, I'd suggest taking it to a shop and having them diagnose it for you. It does sound as if you've chipped or broken something in there. Sounds like you're in line for another trans or at least a rebuild.
If you're interested I've got a trans for sale from a 98.5 SVT. Excellent working condition when taken out. It has 36K miles on it. I put in a 2000 year upgraded trans with quiafe and bulldog box upgrades in mine so I've got this one as a spare.
