Yep, 10 over is generally safe. I heard some cops on radio once saying they set the radar to wake them up or whatever at typically about 12 over. They also said some juridictions around here were tighter and would set for 7-10 over.

I once (about 97 years ago) went 100 on farm roads in central Ill...nice straight roads flat as a table w/ no one around. It was in spring so corn did not yet obstruct view of anyone entering. One or two of my tires was messed up after that. Never gone over about 85 since then.

I may sound like a fuddy-duddy, but around town, I rarely speed. Too many places for people to pull out.

On a freeway, with it's limited access, I may be between 10 and 20 over, depending on conditions.

The worst thing in most cases is to be out there by yourself. I want some light traffic out there with me so I can pick up officer friendly's radar gun in time to slow down. I actually travel slower if I'm the only one out there because there isn't as much warning.

I try to stay in the right lane, and of course try not to attract attention.

Sometimes on a Saturday or Sunday morning, if I want to go on a high speed run, I'll get up early, take a couple of passes through at legal speeds to check for officer friendly, road conditions and the like. Then, if all is good, I click off a 130+ MPH run and go home.

How did your tires get messed up on country roads? I grew up on the country roads in central Illinois. The site of 2 of my 3 sprints to 140+. Can't say I ever had any tire problems. IMO country roads are about as safe as you can get off a track. Just gotta watch out for the occasional pheasant! lol

I have some family in Dekalb, IL and they have nice little rumble strips before intersections on their long, staight, paved country roads. What are those for? To wake you up? laugh

Don't weave in and out. Cops will always go after you for that, it's reckless driving. And how about some discipline? I love to go fast also but keep in down to a respectable speed.

OK I'll make this intelligent. Don't tell me there ain't backroads near Eugene, Or. Find one and do what you want. If you do get nabbed (highly unlikely) apologize profusely, admit being stupid, point out you went out of your way to avoid property/traffic. That would work like a charm if you didn't already have tix, they are like eating peanuts, once you get one expect many more.

98 CSVT, basic mod's, my slowest car yet but still faster than the wife's Talon Tsi AWD. Not by much, though. Now if I could get the back wheels to do something....

I am not sure but if I remember it was similar to radial pull. Maybe crappy tires that could not take the speed??? Was not the road or anything like that. That was about 22 years ago...

I sometimes took those farm roads part of the way home from U of I to Chicago area...not at that speed (I just wanted to go 100 one time) but freeway had 55 mph limit so farm roads were as fast or faster and not patrolled...by july I think you can not see over the corn though so it was not a good way to go in later summer or early fall.

Route 47 by any chance? South of Morris (which is an hour and a half north of Champaign), there's NOTHING except for the odd town, which are few and far between. I'll wait for a semi that wants to go 70 to pass me, then let him run radar; I make great time this way. North of Yorkville it isn't so hot; lots of towns all the way to the Wisconsin border. The only part of 47 I haven't driven is between Mahamout and Champaign--I always get on/off I-74...

Backroads rule. smile

I suggest either a good detector, or just do as I do, pay very good attention to the shoulder and the median. Watch for brake lights ahead of you, watch for flashing lights from oncoming traffic. Try to know where turnarounds are where cops may sit, and slow down accordingly. Then again, sometimes you're just gonna get nailed.

TJ - I know I drove on 47 a few times. But I was refering to real farm roads not the rural state hwys...I think they had designations like 1600E.

Really nothing but farm fields and an occasional silo. If I remeber right, took those up to around kankakee...then had to go on one hwy or another.
