Since I have both cassette's and CD's I picked up a factory cassette player for my Beater car. Soon I learned that the speaker connector for the stock cassette player does not match the one on my stock CD player. How do I make this work or is it even possible? The ultimate goal is to be able to switch out the head unit to go with whatever I have at the time - cassettes or CDs.

Buy a nice tape deck, with a CD changer. Or if you really want to do it the hard way, buy an aftermarket CD player with the wire harness that plugs into the stock plugs. Then whenever you want to switch stereos just take one out and plug the other one back in.

If you want both Cassette and CD, buy a pre-98 console with the second DIN-sized radio hole, but a used Premium Sound cassette player from any Contour/Mystique (Premium Sound cassettes have use the same connectors as CD players, because they're both Premium Sound) and buy a used dealer-installed CD player (no radio) and put in the second hole, it connects right in with the cassette player and uses the function buttons (volume, bass, treble, etc...) buttons on the cassette, but the forward, reverse, etc...buttons are on the CD unit. That way you'll have both stock CD and cassette, understand? HTH

I understand what your saying, but basically I bought the wrong factory cassette player. If I would have purchased one that had Premium Sound, then I would be able to swap them out no problem because the connectors are identical? Sounds reasonable - thanks for the input. Anybody out there need a non-Premium Sound cassette player from a 1999 C? You'll see it on Ebay here in a few days.

Problem: want to play CD's & cassettes in a Contour Solution: aftermaket tape deck CD/ changer controller and CD changer for the trunk
The Contour OEM system sucks. Complicate it with the external amp the CD HU requires and it is just going to end up costing you quite a bit to get it to work, and then you have to use the u-tool to swap every time. What a PITA. I had a Sony tape deck in my SVT with CD changer control and a 10 disc changer in my trunk. The HU (refurb) cost $140 and the same for the changer. I sold my OEM CD head unit on eBay for $202. Sell both of your head units on eBay and you will probably come out even on cost, and you'll have much improved sound when you bypass that factory amp.
Just some ramblings... Aaron

I was thinking the same thing when I put in my Pre-98 console, but I don't feel like buying another headunit with tape, then the other CD player. Kenwood has this option. I'd rather get a small moniter for the top and use the bottom hole for my Kenwood CD HU.
I want it to look like this one day...

no difference between premium and non premium sound cassette players. the connectors may be different, but the only real difference is that the "premium" is hooked up to an external amp hidden behind the glove box.
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

Premium Sound radios will NOT work in cars that are not premium sound, they have no internam amp, meaning no sound. That's why the connectors are different, can't you just see someone trying to sue Ford because "their radio dosent work"?

Well when I got my svt the aftermarket hu was a Sanyo FXCD-500 ( I think ). Has both cd player / cassete built into a single din slot. Maybe look into that if you're interested. I don't think it sounded that good, but of course I had the factory amp in at that time. Had some nice features though, and got the job done.
