If you suspect a problem with the water pump do not drive the car. Overheating is almost as bad for an engine as running it without oil.

Autozone is one of the retailers that sells a replacement waterpump for our cars that has a metal impeller.

I think the type of waterpump failure the Ford technician was talking about was more along the lines of a pump shaft bearing failure, thats where the shaft will shimmy. The problem our cars suffer from is the impeller cracks at its hub and basically falls off the shaft, or the shaft spins inside the impeller and it doesn't turn. It will be virtually un-noticable on the outside.
