there was a TSB out on this.
the squeak has to do with the ebrake cable.
something about the star shaped bracket that needs to be repositioned.
cobrar had this same annoying squeak and he tried everything until he came upon the TSB.
He brought it to our ford dealer and they fixed it for him. no more squeak.

Just did a quick search and came up with this:

http://www.contour.org/FAQ/FAQ.cgi?s=probs&display=creak
it lists TSB #11288.

My car had a problem with the parking brake cable brackets. There was a TSB(don't know the number). This may be what you are hearing. Apperently the fix was to turn them upside down. My squeek was comming from the left rear. It was REAL ANNOYING! It happened more in the cold and less/not at all when it rained. Sound familiar?

I can ignore the squeak since I listen to music really loud, but what pisses me off is that everytime I have any passengers in the car, I get a really loud thunk from the right rear after going over bumps and some left hand turns... I have around back there, but I cant see anything broken or loose yet...but I do need to take a better look.

I had the same problem with mine. it clunked real bad when i had someone in the back seat. back your car up on ramps , slide under and look at the end's of the sway bar . there is a big rubber bushing at the end of the sway bar and a pcs that goes thru the middle of the bushing that attaches to the stut. it will be quit noticable if the bushing is missing , the pcs that attaches to the strut will be floating in the middle of a big ring where the bushing was.
the clunking is the pcs banging around in the ring. you can buy just the end's . you don't have to replace the sway bar.
The reason why it clunkes so bad when someone is in the back seat .Is the suspension move's alot more than if you where by your self .

I am hoping that will be it. I dont have a garage, but a friend at work (he is a Bimmer nut) is going to have a look with me after work Thursday.

Hmmm...I have also noticed a slight scraping/rubbing noise while cornering (fastish)...perhaps it is a symptom of the same problem?

I am glad I am looking at this tonight, the knocking from my rear (the car's rear, not my ass) is getting worse every day.....
