Last night my o/d off light began flashing and the hard shifts began. The light is no longer flashing, but the shifting is still somewhat hard when o/d is off. I searched this site and read some info about this, but it was not so clear to me what might be causing this problem. Can anyone tell me what's probably causing this, and what I might do? Thanks!!!

Welcome onboard.

Unfortunately you have experienced a problem where I have yet to see a definitive post re cause. Overheating or fluid levels have been suspected. I too, experienced this a couple of times a year+ ago, hasn't returned. At the time I did not notice any change in atx operation and fluid level and color were ok.

As far a I understand the problem can be caused by a faulty speed sensor as well. Can't find the link right now but its in the archive. My contour does the same thing and I am looking into whether it is the speed sensor.... you can have the codes pulled (off the computer) and they should give you an indication as to whats causing the problem.

Hi. I have the same thing. The code I pulled TODAY is 1405.

It is a censor on the top/back of the engine. It says upstream hose clogged or off. I am posting to ask, do I have to remove my air flow system to follow the hoses. And does anybody know which one is the upstream?

I also have a 96Gl ATX
And was informed that the Tranny is NOT going to die on you. So don't get nervious thinking your tranny has to bee replaced.
That only goes for the 1405 code. The others I have no F'ing clue.

According to the codes listed in the FAQ section:
http://www.contour.org/FAQ/FAQ.php?s=probs&displayid=10

that is a code indicating a problem with hose going to DPFE sensor which is part of the EGR system. Don't see how that would be related to o/d light. Hose goes from the sensor, which is located under the EGR valve, to the EGR-to-exhaust-manifold tube. There are two hoses which measure pressure across a venturi in this tube, thereby allowing the PCU to deduce EGR flow. Hoses are of different diameter. To gain access you have to at least remove hose to IAC valve although a hose to PCV and one other may also have to be removed. Tricky area too see and to get hand into. Usually you would hear exhaust leak if hose was off or damaged. Problems with these hoses may also indicate too much backpressure in exhaust (possible cat plugged).

Thank you for the replies. On my 30 minute drive to work today evrything was fine... no flashing light, no hard shifts. But......on the way home,8 hours later, the flashing and hard shifting began again. I pulled into the gas station, turned my car off, then started it again. The flashing o/d light stopped, but it was still shifting kinda hard. It's wierd. If anyone has any other info, I'd be glad to hear it.

Could that cause the car to jerk when going from 1 to 2nd gear? When my O/D light goes off that is what happens.

I was thinking it could be the VSS.. The Vehicle Speed Sensor.. But the best thing to do is take it to Auto Zone Once Again and let them Plug the car up and test it...

I had this same thing happen, it turned out to be a clogged tranny filter for me . Got the trany flushed and got the filter changed, no more problem.
