If you are going to try a Mobil 1 filter, why not just get a K&N HP-2010 Performance Gold?

I don't know what the Mobil 1 costs, but you could call a local distributor for K&N and get them to order their filter. Or, pay Summit $8 extra per order and get some (I order a few at a time from Summit to spread that across a few filters, but I put way more miles on than you do).

Amsoil can be used for 35,000 miles...is this true?

Advance Auto carries K&N, and Autozone carries Mobil 1. I've been running K&N HP-2010 since I owned the car, and I believe the Mobil 1 would perform as good and it cost basically the same. But since I've been using K&N, I don't really see a reason of switching. I also like the big hex nut at the bottom of the K&N very much; don't need to use a strap wrench or cup wrench, just use a adjustable wrench that I used to take the drain plug out (but I use the pilers lately when I change it at work).

Oil Filters Thread

I'm considering the K&N as well, now, but follow the link to the filters thread to see my dilemma.

Read up on AMSOIL at web page .. I use their 0w-30 oil now.. I started with the 5W-30 but have switched because of using my car on the track.. The car's improvement in performance is quite noticable between 10w-30 (dino) and 0w-30 synthetic..

Dumb question: But isn't 6 quarts too much for the Contour? Is it safe? What are the pros and cons of using so much oil?

I think the 6 quart capacity is referring to the SVT with the oil cooler, but I'm not sure.

Manual for 99 SE says oil capacity is 5.8 quarts with filter.

Problem: These engines have some kind of oil starvation issue, due to small sump and oil pickup getting dry in long right-handed fast sweepers.

Proposed solution: Add more oil. specified capacity is either 5.5 (early) or 5.8 (later), and that extra .5 quarts is not enough to cause problems.

Possible trouble: Too much oil in the pan will cause cavitation (frothing) as the crank churns it, which could lead to exacerbation of the problem (oil starvation, or air getting sucked into the pickup) you are trying to solve. But the experts around here seem to agree that an extra .2-.5 quarts is fine.
