This may sound like a stupid question, but exactly how does a cold air intake work vs. the stock intake? What are the recommended brands of good cold air intakes? Thanks.

-17x7 Emkei RS5 Wheels

True cold air intakes get cold air from outside the engine bay. This is dense air that inproves performance. I think you may be grouping all of the aftermarket air intakes into the cold air category. Most of the benefit of an aftermarket air intake system on a contour is the NEW filter. Cone style filters posess a much greater ability to let air in. Less resistance and more area for the are to flow through. There are many combinations of filter and pipe available for the contour. KKM, BAT, SHO Shop, CTA. Check the links to these companies on the contour.org homepage under links/ reviews. They are towards the bottom of the page.. Other good options are out there besides those. Check out a search on Air intake or air filters, ect.. Hope this helped a little,
Later,
Chris S.

Isn't the stock filter a cone type though?

Yup.. but then they're mainly talking about an open air type filter, while the stock SVT filter is in a closed box.

Jpatt, Oops, I forgot the SVT has a cone style filter, but I was refering to an open element filter setup.

So what is the advantage of having an open element system?
