I had a plug blow out while driving home from Baltimore today. Anybody have any advise on helicoiling the threads that were stripped out? Should I try this myself or let a professional handle it?

Well, if you aren't mechanically inclined, I wouldn't suggest doing that sort of thing yourself. I've done quite a few, however, I'm paid to do it. wink

I'ts not that complicated a procedure, but if its improperly done, it can cause more harm than good. That, and you need compressed air to blow out the metal shavings from tapping the cylinder head once you are done. Most people don't have compressors at home.

Jeff have you seen the plug holes on the V6...

Good luck getting a tap or heli-coil in there without the proper tools...

Take it to a shop. That way if the screw up and have to pull the head it's not on your dollar...

I've done the old style plug holes (steel & aluminum) on the motor, but would not want to try recessed holes in an aluminum head.

Good advise!
I have a compressor, tools and quite a bit of mechanical knowledge, however, I did not want to tackle this particular project. As a side note, driving home from the repair shop after the repair, the motor rattled and died mad so i think a major cash outlay is close at hand frown On the bright side I just bought a 2001 Corvette Z06 so at least I have an alternate ride laugh laugh

Spark plugs don't rip out all by themselves, some sub-sub-moron has to strip the threads in the head first!! So WHO last changed your plugs? or was it a FACTORY fault?
