DFrank,
I went the same route you went. Almost:
I had the factory CD/amp combo and decided to switch out the ford spkrs for some pioneers. Then I did the deck, and just recently the Sub.
Changing the deck from a ford HU to an aftermarket HU will be the most noticeable difference, but if you're going from tape to CD, and changing the spkrs, you won't be too badly off. Just consider an aftermarket HU. Besides, you can probably get some decent coin on the used Ford HU on Ebay.

sell both the ford HUs, probably can get over $100 for them and then just about any decent brand cd player you get will be much better than stock. (this will lead you to want new speakers though, as aftermarket HUs almost always have more power than stock, and so they'll make your stock speakers distorted.)

OK,
Here's what I can piece together. Hey, you guys aren't offending me. This is nothing like a sports board. You want offended? Go to almost any college BB discussion board.
Anyway.
Someone said here or on another thread that the key codes aren't a problem. What I have is a manual error in the factory service manual. I can go with that.
About power.
I don't think I have premium sound. I'll have to check again, because it *is* an SVT, and I thought that there were no options besides sunroof/no sunroof, tape/CD.
The factory tape unit I have has an onboard amp. The CD player I bought does not. So right now I have a problem. What I'll do is if I don't have "premium sound", I'll contact the guy I bought it from and see if he would throw me the amp for a dime or so. I seem to recall that he was replacing his whole system. If not, I'll sell it and get an aftermarket unit that has the same form factor but has a lo-power amp onboard. I could also buy an amp, but someone said the connectors were not plug and play. As I was advised, I may just want to unload my stock units on ebay and get an aftermarket unit.
Strange that the factory CD and tape players have different power outputs. Real strange.

That would be the absolute, best solution. There are pleanty of nice aftermarket decks out there in the $100-200 range.
