Wife's 98 Mystique (Zetec, ATX) threw the dreaded CEL this morning. I looked at the Haynes manual but it said you couldn't use a voltmeter to pull codes, and wouldn't list them Only ill effects is a quick and infrequent miss at idle. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip It pulled P0171 (System Too Lean - Bank No. 1), the guy said it was too lean and throw some premium into it for a couple of weeks and cleared the code (that's what he told the wife anyway, it's car, she took it on lunch )

Thoughts?

The 171 will probably come back, but it's not really harmful. The O2 sensors get weaker over time (60K miles is typical) and start indicating a lean mixture. Computer tries to compensate with more richer mixture which turns off light for awhile, but burns more gas=less mileage. Bank 1 is hardest to reach being between the engine & firewall. New sensors are about $60.

So is it a real PITA, or just more difficult than others?

Check for any vac leaks

Clean the MAF with brake parts cleaner or electronic parts cleaner and reset the code.

These are some inexpensive things you can try for this code.

Just more difficult than the others... If you remove the coil pack, (5 min.) you can get on the sensor with a sensor socket and a thin breaker bar. Once you crack it loose, it's not too hard to remove. I proped my hood extra high and knealed on the UIM to reach down where the sensor is.

Do the upper or lower O2 sensors fail first?

I currently have 92K, with original sensors around. Cats replaced at 82K.

Sounds like there maybe a vac leak... near the intake plenum, it sounds like a lot of air is sucking in some where (more than I ever remember), you can hear it with the hood down, but it seems to be coming from that area
