The oil company studies show that dino oil does start loosing some of it's lubrication and cooling properties after 3K miles. Of course they're in the business of selling more oil.
The synthetics are supposed to hold up better and last longer, so synth oil should safely last 6000 miles if the filter is changed to keep the contamination down. (Just my 2c)
