I'm looking now, while I've got a few months to buy.

I looked at a Mazda Protege5, and tomorrow I'm going to look at Subaru.

I'm interested in the following...

***2003 MAZDA 6*** (220 hp 3.0L 24V V6 Duratec?)
2003 Subaru WRX Sedan
2003 Toyota Matrix XRS
2003 Toyota Camry Solara SLE V6
2003 Acura RSX-S
2003 Mercedes C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe

That's a tough one...would you consider a manual transmission? If so the RSX would probably be fun...

I think you are going to find the Matrix to be weak. I test drove the Vibe (w/my gf and salesperson onboard) and found it to be dog slow. You hear about the lack of low end torque, and that's to be expected. But I was at least expecting some sort of turbo rush near 6K RPMs, and it wasn't to be found. Too much work for not enough results IMHO.

Good luck.

would you go for anything used? In that price range there is a lot of stuff (e36 M3 for one).

Ironic, I went car shopping with a buddy of mine last month, and these were many of the cars he looked at..

The WRX is freaking awesome.. If not for his wife, he'd be driving one right now. He ended up with a Matrix XRS, which is pretty cool, has the 180hp Celica GTS engine and the utility because of it's bigger size. Got a smoking deal on it too ($18000 FULLY loaded). The Solara/Camary was just so bland and floaty. We thought the MTX might make it more fun, but it really didn't. The RSX-S didn't wow me for the price. The C230 Sport is uber-gay. His best friend has one, so we got some extensive seat-time in it.. Was hoping for more, since it has the same engine as my SLK230 Sport, but these are 2 different cars. Again, not worth the money, and I'd be embarrassed to drive one.

I'd also check out the Protoge family.. My g/f just got a loaded 2002 Protege ES. Unfortunately the MazdaSpeed Protege wasn't out yet, but even w/o the turbo, it's a real hoot to drive. The Protege5 is sharp as well, though actually a little harder to find, as they're in great demand.

Good luck, and hope this helped.
