I know my dad was ready to throw it in the woods a couple times, and we had to replace the whole pump, not just the front half!

We actually used red Loctite on the gasket, to both provide additional sealing and to prevent it from falling off when installing.

Galvanic action of dissimilar metals. I know from my solar collector installations, copper is on the + side and aluminum is on the - side. Copper & aluminum will corrode each other very quickly.

Yes, that's good advice, and very true. I know this from owning a boat. Most antifouling bottom paints these days have lots of copper in them. If you use this paint on the alumimum outdrive of the engine, the copper will eat the aluminum at a rapid rate, using salt water as a catalyst to hasten the process. It's amazing what galvanic corrosion will do between copper and aluminum.

When I changed my water pump, I just replaced the gasket with a new one, and made sure the surfaces were clean. I didn't use any sealants, and no leaks at all. I never use any liquid sealants unless it specifically asks for it, or if I get a leak without it first.

I did not have that big of a problem, certainly not like I though I would but then again I ignored the directions to separate the housing from the pump before removal. Or were the directions NOT to do that? In any case I did the opposite and minimized my pain. I took out the battery and removed the intake hose and had all the room I needed to access the bolts with 1/4 drive extensions and universals. Hardest part was the hoses. I can't remember what I had to do at the front in front of the radiator but I got at it with a king-dong 1/4 drive extension from underneath. However, on the install I caused myself a problem down the road by thinking the radiator overflow hose got routed underneath the WP cover, and it rubbed against a pulley until it burned through. That skinny little hose stays OUTSIDE the cover.
