my atx went in kinda the same way as your wife's....was on the freeway and needed more power to change lanes to merge onto another freeway on the way to moms house...usually i take the car out of overdrive to get the response i need at the time...this time when i pushed the button the revs went way up as if i had put the car in neutral...i tried clicking back into od but nothing happened...i slowed down my pace but managed to make it the last 10 miles or so to moms house
got out and checked the fluid and there was none!!! i just had the atx flushed 3 wks prior and assumed then that the tech's didn't refill the tranny but it would hve gone out much sooner if that was the case with the way i drive
added some fluid and tried ot drive it again but no good... thanks to the limp home feature built in i was able to get back down the freeway a few miles to the nearest ford dealer and they confirmed 2nd and 4th (overdrive) gears were toast
felt really cool driving down the freeway doing 70 in 3rd gear....not...the rpms were somewhere around 4500 or more
2700 smackers for the fix thank goodness i had a used car warranty...with other work done (waterpump, therm, trans mounts and various other little items total bill was $4100...i paid 823 and the warranty co picked up the rest....if not for them i would be riding a 10 speed now
