I have a 1995 Contour and I had a knocking sound when I turned my wheel to the right as well earlier this year. And it turned out to be the sway bar link. $12 part. I had a mechanic friend of mine do it for me. I am not sure if this is your problem or not, just letting you know what happened to my car. Although I didn't have a squaling noise with it.
