Hey all. I have a '97 V6 with roughly 59000 miles on it. Recently, when I turn the wheel even slightly to the right, I get get a pop / knock, accompanied with a mild creak. Any ideas? I have the extended warranty, so I want to know if it's worth my trouble to take it in.
Please post any additional questions you might need, and I'll do my best to answer promptly if you can help me out.

I would take it in anyways to be on the safe side but the only experience I have with poping on turns is the um... i think its called a u-joint somthing liek that. All I know is that when those things go out you are stuck. Happened to me on an old chevy. That may or may not be your problem. I really dont know.

I have a 1995 Contour and I had a knocking sound when I turned my wheel to the right as well earlier this year. And it turned out to be the sway bar link. $12 part. I had a mechanic friend of mine do it for me. I am not sure if this is your problem or not, just letting you know what happened to my car. Although I didn't have a squaling noise with it. Keep us updated and let us know what you find out. Good luck!

Is it a continous clicking/ popping sound or just once during the turn in and then goes away? If continous it is likely the outer CV joint and replacing the halfshaft with a rebuilt one for about 100 dollars or less is the way to go, labor extra. If a sound that only occurs once during the turn it could be anything from a loose steering rack to loose or worn mounts on the sway bar, bad lower ball joint, worn upper strut bearing, worn or loose mounts for the lower A-arm etc. They all need to be inspected and eliminated as the problem.

It's a continuous series of creaks, with at least one distinct pop, just as I start to turn the wheel. This happens at varying speeds, and when the car's still.
So this is worthy of taking by the dealer? Like I said, I have a extended warranty, with a $100 deductable.

the popping soud would be a bad cv joint(constant velocity) we have like 4 of them on our cars 2 on each side, the boot might have been torn and the fluid inside of its probably gone to you have metal to metal contact.

Probably worth having dealer look at. But check out what suspension components your extended warranty covers. You may want to have a friend and yourself look first while other is turning wheel to see if noise source can be located since you say it happens when car is at rest as well. Creaking implies rubbing and movement.
