Hi :
Had serpintine belt changed a while ago. Ran ok for 2 months.
Died yesterday. Mechanic thinks "It bent a valve" ?
Timing belt didn't break.
Is there a TSB about changing the "tensioners" when ya change the belt ?
I thought that if the belt got whacked-out, it wouldn't bend a valve.
Has this happened to anyone else ?
Not sure that this is exactly what happened yet. Mechanic's hasn't done a tear down yet.
( Aren't the serpintine belt & the timing belt one & the same ?)
Thanks,
jim

No. The serpentine belt gets power from the crankshaft pulley and distributes power to other areas, such as the power steering and A/C. And I don't see how a belt could bend a valve, since the belt is external to the engine and the valve is internal to the engine.
Timing belt is something completely different that is beyond my knowledge. Maybe someone else can explain.

i'm not very knowledgeable about engines but i was told when i change my serpentine belt that i need to change my tensioner too. my problem is that my car makes a loud squealing sound when i hit the gas while the AC is on. dont know if this helps but...

The timing belt also gets it's power from the crankshaft. It runs the cams. Do you have the 4cyl or V6? I have the I4 2.0L and the timing belt can be viewed under the plastic cover on the left side of the engine. If it broke, your cams stopped moving, but the engine didn't. That would have some valves in the open position with a cylinder head bashing against it. This would bend a valve. Very bad. You would need a head job. Highly recommend replace the valves, valve guides, and have the head machined (could be a good time for some mods :-0).
How many miles?

Thanks,

Sorry, missed the 4Cyl in the title. What year? Miles? The timing belt is separate from the Timing belt. Here is a cutaway: [image]http://www.alldatadiy.com/alldata/AFI~V1649095~C26204~R0~OD~N/0/41746678/56351448/56351826/56351827/34853741/34853743/34872060/34855855[/image] (I hope the image shows up...) If not, go to www.alldatadiy.com. They have all kinds of car manuals there. I also have the Haynes manual and someone else posted an e-bay site where you can get the Ford manual on CDROM.

I'm having the same problem. Almost a year ago (200,000km or 120,000 miles) I replaced both belts. Last week, at 228,000km (130,700 miles) the car died unexpectedly. I've been told that a tensioner for the timing belt let go, and I'm faced with junking the car or putting $2000 - $3000 into a rebuild (btw, it's the 4cylinder).
In speaking with a few people, I've learned a few things: The engine rebuilding firm I spoke to (recommended by a both a dealer and independent garage) said that the 4cylinder "doesn't stand up very well" and that I should be thankful that I got as much out of it as I did. The guy who towed my car said that he had the same thing happen to his car (an Escort). I know that both these cars have a lot of Mazda parts, are the motors of Mazda design as well?

It is hard for me to believe that the I4 'Does not stand up very well' When you have 130K miles and others have 112K miles, etc. I only have 89K miles on mine and am very happy so far. Others on this forum rave about the Zetec. I would rather have an SVT, but hey, this is what I could afford at the time.
You could look at this as an 'opportunity' to put in a 3.0 or a 2.5L v6...
