Yesterday I asked about resetting the computer as I had seen that procedure mentioned as a possible fix for hard shifting. I disconnected the negative battery terminal for 30 minutes.

Today, on my 35 mile trip to work, I was cruising at around 65 on the PA Turnpike when I noticed that my O/D Off light was flashing. I waited until I got to the Parkway and stopped behind the usual heavy traffic. I turned the ignition off and back on, and the O/D light quit flashing.

I hadn't really noticed any problems shifting from first to second until I got onto the Parkway (bumper to bumper traffic for approximately 7-8 miles) at which point the hard shifting problem seemed to reappear. The issue is most noticeable at low speeds because the car seems to lunge forward.

Are these problems related? Or do I have more than one thing going wrong here? Are these common issues with known solutions or am I going to have to take this thing into the dealership?

By the way, this is a '97 Mystique with approx 95,500 miles.

I did not have the O/D flashing problem, but I do have the hard shifting. I did the same thing you did (disconnected the (-) terminal on the batter to turn of the CEL light.)

Hmmmm...

Interesting. I never got the CEL light (well, not with this problem, anyway).

Do you have the V6 or 4 Cyl? I have found that mine shifts hard (actually won't shift at all from 1st to 2nd) at high rev's now. I have to take my foot off the gas, then it shifts. I had the air intake assembly off last night looking to see if I had a vacuum problem but found nothing. I have the 4cyl Zetech. There is a hose coming out of the top of the tranny that I cannot find where it goes. I think it is some kind of breather, but I am not sure.

There is a vent tube for the ATX sort of below the battery. The flasihing OD light means that the computer has detected something wrong with the ATX and will have a diag code stored which can be scanned at an auto parts store. This is usually pretty bad news. A check of the fluid level and fresh change of fluid is probably a minimum remedy although it may not help. The Lucas ATX fluid conditioner may be a temoporary help until the tranny can be repaired/replaced. I know some GM owners that have had good success with this.

Well. That's good news. I'll probably just trade it in on a new Chevy. I can probably get 500 or so for the Mystique, I would guess.

What if I have never had that sensor replaced? Does that mean that the speed sensor may have gone bad?

Could be. I was going to look at that later when I got home. Do you have a CEL? It is easy to get to the speed sensor. You could just check the connections to start with.

Did you have the Wiring Harness replaced under Recall?

I also found a bunch more articles. They want alot of money to look them up. I am going to poke around some more.
