omg... i took the MAF off, and looked at the little prong thingys in the hole, they were BROWN!

i sprayed some STP Throttle Body cleaner in it, and they turned WHITE and the metal connectors turned METAL again!

holy crap i think this fixed the problem of the car idiling and stuff like crap! i suggest everyone try this !

After 110k Miles I tried cleaning mine to no avail so I replaced it with Ford item (£80 ~$130). WOW Somebody turned my engine way up laugh

Definately the most critical sensor performace wise on the whole car, keep it clean or replace it

madmole,

Your K&N filter probably spewed its oil all over the MAF elements and clogged it up. For anyone who has an aftermarket permanent element filter like K&N, your MAF is vulnerable. Inspect it often, and don't overdo the filter oil!

Whould you not recommend a K&N filter then? I am about due to replace mine, and was thinking about getting one. What do you think?

Can you give some instructions. And not to be stupid or anything but what does MAF stand for? Sorry just can't remember. This is located on the intake correct?

How would I go about cleaning mine, or checking to see if it need to be cleaned.

Thanks

(Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

You'll get a range of responses on this one, and a lot depends on your driving habits. Aside from the oil-on-MAF issue, the reason permanent element filters like K&N claim greater volume flow is they let larger particles through. For a project car that spends most of its time at a drag strip or clean roads, that's fine. But my daily driver goes through dusty environments every day, so I'll stick with the paper element filters. The stock SVT filter only has 2% flow losses, which 3X better than the standard box filter, but with all the particle protection. Maybe the K&N reduces that to 1%, but that's miniscule stuff, and not worth the extra maintenance and possible operating hassles, in my mind.

I live in London and so my K&N has to filter a lot more particulates and guink than most. As an indicator My cabin filter is blocked at 10k miles

K&N's actually filter to a smaller particle size (Acording to their literature) than the Ford Standard filter so no issues there and my intake tubes have been a lot cleaner since I binned the Ford intake system and swapped to the K&N. I have yet to see any oil from a K&N even on the inside of the K&N filter so I doubt this contaminated the MAF. You have to really over oil the filter to do this

My old MAF was spotlessly clean when I replaced it, it just didn't work. Probably due to 105K miles of heating/cooling cycles rather than contamination

By the way, one of the English magazines (REVS) did a shootout of over 30 replacement air filters. Comparing cost, filtration and max flow on a meter

The K&N won hands down, most foam filters actually decreased air flow. Only filters that flowed more than K&N were wire mesh types

Unfortunately the air filters available here in England are not the same as those in the US (apart from K&N) so these results may not apply to KKM (KMM?) and the other US filters as I've never seen them.

One things I will state is that the air filter is not the restriction on our intakes, its the Intake manifold and the turbulence that hinders the flow.

Can someone tell me where to look for the MAF and how clean it?

Thanks,

Rob
