I know the feeling. Passing other cars on a hill at 130/140km/h in 5th gear makes it all worthwhile.

Bryan!

Please, please, please post the result of changing the bushings. I have the same exact problem with my 98 Mystique. laugh

I've had the rattle for a while now, just as you said - when driving over uneven pavement. I bet you don't hear anything when on a nice, smooth highway. Recently I had my brakes done. When the mechanic test drove the car to check the brakes, he noticed the rattle on his own. He thought it was because of the struts. So I took the car to my dealer's service because I have a "Premiumcare" extended warranty that covers struts. After not properly informing me about the progress of my car, I ended up leaving it overnight. This morning I go to pick it up and he has the balls to tell me the struts are OK and charges me my $50 deductable without solving my rattle problem. The mechanic said he doesn't hear anything. I hate dealing with them! mad

Anyway, when's your appointment? I'm anxious to hear what happens.

Peace.

Just called ford dealer!!! mad They say that the links at the back are tight and the front links are loose. WTF!!!! The noise I hear is from the back confused They thought I meant the back was clunking loud to indicate a strut/spring replace. No!! Mine is just that anoying rattle, light thunping noise!!! I guess I'll call them back and tell them about the brake cable fix and see if they had the smarts to look at that yet!! frown

I'll keep you posted!

Bryan,

What did the total come to?

it's not the links that go bad its the rubber bushings that are used to prevent metal to metal contact between the sway bar and the links.

If the bushings are cracked, shrunk, or broken into two pieces or not there they need to be replaced.

Yes, but assuming the bushings have shrunk or cracked... This would allow more play and is visible by pulling and pushing the links!!!! confused
Also just trying to solve these problems and learn a little more...

I sure hope someone finds the answer to the "Rattling Sound" as that is exactly what it sounds like in our 98 Mystique 2.5L Duratec 5 Speed. Someone earlier on a similar thread mentioned that they thought it coukd be a loose or bent gas tank sensing float that is banging against the tank. My tank was replaced under warranty for the trick gas guage stunt ( a new tank) but they reinstalled the old pump and its integral fuel sending unit.

Regards,

John

Got the same rear "thump" with my '98 2.0 GL. Dealer replaced the front sway bar & end links (covered by aftermarket extended warranty)-- this reduced the knocking noises, but the rear clunk remained. Dealer said the rear suspension was ok, so I'm wondering too what's loose.
